The same treacly, heavy, throbbing riffs that propelled the best tracks of The Exile are punctuated by a decidedly-funereal percussive assault from Casey- wait, shortly followed by a dirge?! I shouldn't be writing this live but I can't stop my fingers, or this slow and somber headbanging. Favorite track: Parable of the Archer.

jfkilshaw The speed of evolution and the commitment to experimentation the fire breathing, people eating pony manages? Astounding. It’s hard to believe two musicians can produce something so dynamic and polished working mostly DIY.

Lastly, but definitely not leastly, the songwriting… in four words emotionally vulnerable belt sander. Guaranteed to wreck you in the best possible way. Paula Abdul as a gut punch. Favorite track: Straight Up (Paula Abdul Cover).

Bridging the gap between past and present,
Calgary’s Mares of Thrace presents
« The Interim » a compendium of eras for the duo presently formed of Thérèse Lanz and Casey Rogers and that featured drummer Stefani Mackichan along with Lanz, in its first incarnation.

Side A features the present line-up of Lanz on vocals, guitar, and Rogers on drums (also on bass, vocals and additional guitars on this side, along with handling recording & production duties) bringing in a brand new composition & leading single « Parable of the Archer » a slow burner of noise rock tinted with doom and gloom, followed by covers of Widow’s Bane by Vienna’s Tarlung (from their album Architect) & side A ending in style with an uncompromising, shape-shifting & insane cover of Paula Abdul’s 1988 dance classic « Straight up ».

Side B features the line up of Lanz and Mackichan on drums, who started the band together, offering 3 songs recorded in 2013 that are more in line with their earlier styling of God City style riffing & “mathy” twists and turns not unlike the earlier input of the band on their 2010 and 2012 albums the Moulting and The Pilgrimage.
